Online K-12 Projects

 

  • Woodland Network - These projects from Sweden allow students to observe and hypothesize about the health of trees in their area. The first project is for students 10 - 15 years old and is called Just a Tree (in both Swedish and English languages). Older students (age 15+) can participate in the more extensive Woodland Research Project (available in nine languages). Data is sent to the project site, then posted for public use. When more data is available, this will be a great site for mathematics/science/geography integration.
  • ThinkQuest
  • It's a Ponds Life - See real students doing real science -- with the help of technology. This student-created Web site guides visitors through a yearlong project, from planning the pond ecosystem study through data gathering and analysis.
  • Math Puzzles
  • Collaborative Internet Projects for lower primary students.  -- online interactive activities, printable worksheets and links.  Also included is a class website that has digital webfolios for each of her students, a teacher’s journal, links, and collaborative project descriptions that they are involved in.
  • Hero of the Year  - Activity - In this Web-based activity by 4th-grade teacher Rebecca Pilver, elementary students research selected Web sites to select a Hero of the Year, then design a commemorative stamp. This is a nice example of how elementary educators can make use of existing Web sites in their interdisciplinary lessons. 
  • A Web-based Interactive Stock Market Learning Project for K-12 basic lessons in portfolio management, economic indicators, and foreign relations, and then set them free to develop their own stock portfolios, using realtime NYSE and NASDAQ stock data 
  • Hubble Image Computer Picturebooks  Download the picture books available on this site for both Windows and Macintosh computers.  gorgeous images and  accompanying text. There are many topics to choose from including Mars, Earth, Gems of Hubble, PlanetQuest, Other Worlds and Volcanic Features of Hawaii
  • Amazing Space Web-Based Activities   interactive Astronomy activities complete with Hubble Space Science Telescope pictures. There are a variety of different units with full background material, lesson plans and lists of additional resources. 
  • Kansas Collaborative Research Network  Join schools from all over the globe by participating in collaborative projects.  You do NOT have to be located in Kansas.  The KanCRN Project is committed to inquiry as basic to education and as a controlling principle in the organization and selection of students’ activities.   • Internet Projects curriculum based projects

  • InvestSmart - Developed by students for the ThinkQuest competition, this site includes basics, lessons, a simulation, and examples. In the interactive stock market simulation, each "player" is given $100,000 to invest in over 5,000 companies. Other features include easy setup for classes or investment clubs, a "Group Directory" view of each student portfolio, research capability of stocks, benchmark of each portfolio, and helpful set up tips for classes from 20 to100 students.
